NWIN #13 – January 2006

NWIN Program 13:
Lummi Tribal member Chenoa Egawa hosts the program from the Washington State Capital Museum in Olympia, Washington. In the program open, museum educational curator, Susan Rohrer explains the museum’s dedication to cultural enrichment workshops, seminars and events that are open to the public. A large part of the museum’s focus is on history of the indigenous people and cultures of the region. One of the current temporary exhibits is entitled, “Faces From the Land” a photographic journey through Indian Country. The exhibit features photos of Pow Wow dancers by Ben Marra and is produced by Linda Marra. An interview with the Marras gives perspective to the depth of spirit and richness of quality to be found at Pow Wow gatherings.

Once outlawed in the U.S. and Canada, the Pow Wow has today, grown well beyond the traditional boundaries of origin on the prairies and Great Plains and is now widespread throughout North America.The spectacular and inspiring Pow Wows are almost always open to the general public for people of all ages and walks of life to witness and enjoy.  The Siletz Tribe’s Restoration Pow Wow is featured.

Everett, Washington hosted a Martin Luther King Community Celebration, Wednesday January 11th. After a peace march through downtown. Renowned author and Spokane Tribal member, Sherman Alexie gives the keynote speech at the Everett Events Center
The Yakama Nation professional basketball team, the Yakama Sun Kings are posting a winning; 17 and 6 record at mid-season and ticket sales are up.
The 175 member Stillaguamish Tribe announces plans to expand what they call, ‘the ‘World’s Friendlist Casino’; The Angel of the Winds casino.
